At an age when many youngsters are packing their bags for university or off on their gap-year travels, Ian Hulbert of Wimborne is packing his van to make his rounds. Ian, 20, has set up a pet food and supplies business, PetzRus, which offers free delivery within Dorset and at competitive prices. The business was founded by Ian, who decided against university in favour of self-employment and loves the independence it brings.
Ian left sixth form but university didn't appeal to him. He keeps dogs and a combination of this and constant trips to the pet shop led to him come up with the idea of pet food delivery. Ian did some research and found that this was a niche market and decided to set up the business, which offers all kinds of goods for all kinds of pets with a website giving details of an extensive range of products.
"I love the independence of being self-employed," said Ian. "My research showed that whilst supermarket prices were cheap, the range of goods was relatively small. Also, large bags of pet food are the most economical to buy, but bulky and heavy to carry, so PetzRus will deliver these and many other products. I am very pleased with the way things are going and I'm looking forward to the challenge of building a successful business."
Ian began by leafleting his local area with details of the service. When Ian is not working he finds time for football - either playing with friends or watching AFC Bournemouth - keeping fit or just socialising. "I don't have much spare time, but it's definitely worth it," said Ian.
