Imagine a restaurant that needs £1000 worth of printing done. In the normal commercial world, his only option would be to get out the cheque book and take £1000 out of the bank to pay the printer.

However, if he was part of Bartercard he would still get the printing done, but instead of taking valuable cash out of the bank, his Bartercard account is debited with one thousand trade pounds (the Bartercard currency) whilst the printers account is credited with the same amount.

The restaurant now owes the £1000 to the Bartercard network and not the printer. Bartercard then promote the restaurant sending them Bartercard customers - new business that they would not have had otherwise. The restaurant then takes these reservations to fill slack times when he would otherwise have had empty tables. When the customers pay, the restaurants account is now credited with the cost of the meal and so the printing debt is reduced until repaid.

The restaurant has now received his printing having expended absolutely no cash, and by effectively paying the print bill with food and drink he gets additional benefit with the true cost of the printing being reduced because he only has to take account of his product cost to provide the meals, with all overheads already being paid by his existing cash customers.

From the printers point of view, he's got a new customer he would not normally have got, he's been paid immediately, and he now has £1000 in his trade account that he can spend whenever he likes. He can then make purchases for anything that he needs, and where he is currently using cash, thus leaving his money in the bank as well.
