The Essential Therapy Centre is based in Southbourne, and offers a range of complementary health therapies throughout the Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch areas.
Gary Lyndhurst has been using various complementary and alternative therapy methods for fourteen years now and believes in a holistic approach to treatment. Working alongside health professionals and other therapists Gary can help to relieve you of pain and improve your quality of life.
Bowen
Bowen is a vibration technique which involves a very gentle but direct manipulation of muscles, tendons, fascia, ligaments, joints and nerves. There are frequent pauses between moves or groups of moves which give the body time to benefit. Sports and other traumatic injuries are but a few of the conditions that often respond favourably to Bowen-work. The benefits of de-stressing and relaxation are beneficial, even on their own. Since Gary opened the Centre he has found Bowen to be the most successful, popular and corrective modality offered at the centre, beneficial to all ages and many conditions including.
- Back Pain, sciatica
- Digestive and bowel problems
- Earache and TMJ
- Migraines and headaches
- Fibromyalgia
- Chronic fatigue syndrome
- Hip, knee, ankle and foot problems
- Menstrual and hormonal irregularities
- Neck and shoulder problems (including frozen shoulder)
- Groin pain, pelvic tilt, uneven leg length
- Respiratory and hayfever problems
- RSI, carpal tunnel syndrome and tennis elbow
MASSAGE
Gary practises a range of massage techniques including deep tissue massage, aromatherapy, holistic massage, Indian head massage and hydrotherm.
Deep tissue massage is a massage technique that focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. It aims to release the chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger pressure on the contracted areas, either following or going across the muscle fibres, tendons and fascia.
Aromatherapy is a type of massage where the strokes are usually performed with a very light touch, since most of the effects of the treatment are due to the active healing properties of the essential oils used, rather than the particular movements employed by the therapist. Each oil used in the session is usually made up at the time of the session by the practitioner, based on the symptoms described by the client.
Holistic Massage
A therapeutic holistic massage may also use essential oil blends, based on the presenting history and current state of the person’s physical and emotional body. Holistic massage is an approach which honours the whole person. This means when a client goes for a session, they should benefit from relief of aches and pains on both a physical and an emotional level, relaxing and releasing tensions and stresses.
Indian head massage uses kneading and probing of the head and shoulder muscles, without crunching or cracking of joints, together with massage of the scalp, pressure and acupressure points to help relieve any sinus pressure, stimulate the circulation and increase alertness.
Hydrotherm is carried out while the client is face up on the warm Hydrotherm water filled cushions, assisting in perfect spinal alignment, and is suitable for everyone from babies to the elderly.

Reflexology
Reflexology is a complementary health for activating the body’s own healing power and is both old and new. This has been done with the long established principle that there are energy zones which run through the body, joining the ancient and modern reflex points in the feet with corresponding areas of the body, such as major organs, skin, glands and body parts.
Reflexology reduces stress and induces relaxation, improves circulation, cleanses the body of impurities, re-balances the whole system, and revitalises energy. Reflexology does not diagnose and Gary recommends that he, the client and doctor work together for effective treatment.
Reiki
Reiki is a very simple system of healing, carried out by placing hands on or over a person, (who is always clothed,) animal or plant, with intent to channel Reiki. It heals on all levels, physically, mentally and spiritually and supports the body’s own ability to heal itself. It can provide a serene and calm peace of mind and possibly aid pain. Reiki can be used by everyone and is safe during pregnancy.
The healing energy of Reiki can help with depression, anxiety, stresses and tensions, headaches, colds, toothache, neuralgia, earache, indigestion, menstrual pains, backache and first aid for accidents.
