Why use Kettlebells?
The kettlebell is a cast iron weight (resembling a cannon ball with a handle) used to perform ballistic exercises that combine cardiovascular, strength and flexibility training.
Kettlebells are often described as the ultimate training tool. For fitness professionals they provide a highly effective, adaptable and dynamic approach for total body conditioning.
Why are Kettlebells so unique?
Shape of the kettlebell
The kettlebell’s sphere suspended below the handle increases the pull towards the ground away from the body. Unlike a barbell or dumbbell, a kettlebell can be positioned directly over the user’s centre of mass. This results in increased recruitment of the stabiliser muscles, in addition to the large muscle groups, making kettlebells more effective than barbell or dumbbells.
Position of handle
The handle allows the wrist to remain fixed in neutral alignment, allowing for greater endurance and decreasing the risk of injury. It also has a similar effect to lengthening the lever and becomes another joint.
Gravity
All weights are subject to the affects of gravity. When using kettlebells , the gravitational pull is increased as the weight sits below the handle in the bell. The effect is to lengthen the lever’ which affects the forces applied to the body during exercise.
The 5 benefits of Kettlebells:
Improved cardiovascular fitness
Continuous kettlebell swings provide a metabolic challenge and are a useful tool to improve your cardiorespiratory fitness. Researchers have found subjects burnt an average of 20.2 calories a minute during a 20 minute kettlebell snatch test, the equivalent of running at a 6 minute mile pace.
Increased muscular strength, endurance (MSE) & hypertrophy
Kettlebell lifts provide the necessary resistance to promote muscle adaptations. Kettlebell training can be tailored for specific strength, endurance and hypertrophy improvements, burning more calories as the exercises involve multiple muscle groups.
Increased flexibility
The dynamic nature of kettlebell training promotes flexibility as movement takes place through a greater range of movement, so the value of the exercise is maximised and flexibility is maintained or improved.
Improved body composition and get fast results
Kettlebells provide total body conditioning programmes, improving body composition by burning calories through increased CV and MSE.
Functional training
Kettlebell lifts have direct relevance to everyday activities. Greater demands are placed on the body by controlling momentum of kettlebell lifts and increasing core stability.
Put simply;
‘Kettlebells are cardio and strength training in one workout....It’s like a whole gym in your hand!’
Angie Dowds from The Biggest Loser.

What clients say about me...
Kettlebell Group Sessions
"A very satisfying 'Kettlebell' session with the very motivational Jus Hobbs Maxfit. Already feeling stronger and fitter-by Christmas I'm planning on being 'super woman'!!! I can't recommend Jus enough." Sally Mackness, Christchurch 4th October 2011.
Kettlebell Challenge
I loved the kettlebell challenge in July. I did miss a few days - generally weekends - generally family comittments were the reason for this!
Would love a challenge every month as really saw a massive difference in my physique (tummy mainly), also lost few inches around my middle. I definitely was spurred on knowing lots of others were doing it and must admit that doing the swings in august has not felt the same.
Also having missed nearly a couple of weeks of kettlebells I feel horrid - am doing 200 swings, but being on hol this week I have missed a couple of days, drunk too much and also had chocolate (unheard of normally!). Why do hols give u lack of will power - dreading the scales on Saturday! Ughh! Back to KB's next week and better eating!
Love challenges - bring them on every month I say - don't even need a prize to aim for!
Kate Allot, Sway

One to one training
After just five sessions with Jus, I'm really starting to notice the difference. I feel stronger, more toned and have a lot more energy throughout the day."
I thoroughly recommend Jus as a personal trainer. She's highly motivational, yet friendly and supportive. Best of all, she helps you get the results you're looking for.
