Get Fit for Summer

A BournemouthTown Expert Guide to…
Health & Nutrition: Getting Fit for Summer

BournemouthTown has searched the country for a leading health professional to give his expert opinion on great ways to get fit and improve nutrition.

We grabbed a moment in the busy schedule of Personal Trainer, Lifestyle Consultant and Nutritional Advisor Simon Lovell.

Regardless of where you are in your life, at what level of fitness - there's no doubt that Bournemouth is a fantastic place to get in shape, and whether there's a slight bulge on your belly or you're desperately trying to improve your health for your children's sake, I've got some great tips to help you along the way.

The most important part of getting in shape and staying there is about seeing results and keeping up variety, building into a part of your lifestyle. Not everybody reacts well to the same kind of exercise - and for most it's about learning to be specific about your goals and training according to where you want to be.

You need to find out what is the most practical exercise for you. It's vital that this is something you'll be able to stick at in the longer term. The great thing about Bournemouth is that there are so many options available to you. If you're someone who has never undertaken proper exercise before, then you may want to start by taking up a sport you enjoy watching, such as football, netball, tennis, or badminton. On the other hand, how about something a bit more adventurous like indoor rock climbing? Whatever you do, you should make it a regular weekly activity and involve other people that can motivate you.

Alternative Therapies

Yoga

Yoga is not about your body being bendy or being able to touch your toes.

When I started I was very over weight and could hardly touch my knees - let alone my toes ! I started from the beginning and had no experience of yoga or even exercised for nearly 15 years. I know how it feels to be out of shape.

Having to be flexible is the most common misconception that prevents people from coming to a yoga class. Yoga is not just about how flexible you are or sitting crossed legged meditating and chanting for hours; it is about stretching your body and spine. The more inflexible you are, the more you need yoga. You become flexible by doing yoga.

Massage in a Bottle

What’s the appeal of massage?

When people ask me to explain massage I like to compare it to taking your car for a service: The pipes get a clean and a flush, and the machinery is left feeling more capable and efficient! And just as you would expect to invest a bit of money in the maintenance of a car, your body should be entitled to a certain amount of upkeep as well.

The new millennium has seen Britain become more health conscious than ever before. The initial surge in technological advances that left us living like couch potatoes is now over and most of us understand the fact that we need to balance exercise with a healthy diet.

A-Z of Massage

So What Is Massage?

Massage and bodywork therapies can be defined as the application of various techniques to the muscular structure and soft tissues of the human body. These days massage isn't just for feeling good, it is a holistic therapy that reduces the heart rate, lowers blood pressure, increases blood circulation and lymph flow, relaxes muscles, improves range of motion, and increases endorphins, the body's natural painkillers.

Therapeutic massage enhances medical treatment and helps people feel less anxious and stressed, relaxed yet more alert. It had been said that, "Massage is to the human body what a tune-up is for a car."

Specifically: Massage: The application of soft-tissue manipulation techniques to the body, generally intended to reduce stress and fatigue while improving circulation. The many variations of massage account for several different techniques. Bodywork: Various forms of touch therapies that may use manipulation, movement, and/or repatterning to affect structural changes to the body.

Wellbeing in Winter

We are all more likely to catch cold or flu in winter...

The cold weather can also cause other serious health problems - like heart attacks, stroke and pneumonia. This means it's essential to keep warm in winter. The best way to get through winter is to keep warm and to follow as healthy a lifestyle as possible. What you eat and drink, and the exercise you take, can make a big difference. Wearing the right clothes is also very important.

Don't be SAD!

Why So SAD?

Smile through the winter blues...

The clocks going back in October heralds the start of the dark commute as we leave our homes before sunrise and arrive home after dusk. Often it can feel like constant night as we miss the sunlight hours cooped up in the office.

The 'winter blues' otherwise known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (or SAD) is caused by the shortening of daylight hours and the lack of sunlight in winter. It affects an estimated two million people across the UK each year between September and April.

The human body uses light cues, such as those provided by the sun, to time certain functions.

Properly timed rhythms regulate mood, sleep, wake, appetite, digestion and energy. These daily internal cycles called 'Circadian Rhythms' sometimes fall out of time, meaning an unregulated body clock, resulting in the symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

Symptoms can leave us feeling lethargic, anxious and needing emotional support.
