Planned roadworks in Central Southern England: weekly summary for Monday 2 to Sunday 8 July 2018
The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of 29 June but could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.

 

M3 junctions 7 Dummer to 9 Winchester, Hampshire: resurfacing

Work to ensure road user safety by resurfacing a section of the M3 southbound carriageway near Popham takes place this week. The M3 southbound carriageway will be closed from junction 7 to junction 9 overnight, between 9pm and 6am, on Wednesday 4 July. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the A303 and A34.

 

M3 junction 14 Eastleigh, Hampshire: bridge maintenance

Work to ensure road user safety by maintaining the bridge which carries the M3 over the link to the M27 westbound carriageway continues this week. The link from the M3 southbound to the M27 westbound will be closed overnight, between 9pm and 6am, until Thursday 23 August (Monday to Friday only). A clearly signed diversion will be in place via M27 junction 5.

In addition, the southbound entry slip road at junction 13 will be closed during the same period. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via Leigh Road, Woodside Avenue and Allbrook Way to access the M3 southbound carriageway at junction 12.

 

M4 junction 10 Wokingham, Berkshire: street lighting

Work to improve journeys by maintaining the street lighting at junction 10 continues this week. The slip from the M4 eastbound to the A329(M) Reading-bound carriageway will be closed overnight, between 9pm and 6am, until Friday 13 July (Monday to Friday only). A clearly signed diversion will be in place via junction 8/9 and return.

 

M4 junctions 12 Theale to 13 Chieveley, West Berkshire: bridge refurbishment

Work to improve journeys by refurbishing a series of bridges that carry the M4 over local roads continues this week. 24 hour narrow lane, 50mph speed limit and overnight lane closures will be in place on the east and westbound M4 until July.

M4 junction 13 Chieveley, West Berkshire: street lighting

Work to ensure road user safety by upgrading the street lighting around the junction continues this week. The westbound exit slip road, eastbound entry slip road and lanes on all other approach roads will be closed overnight, between 9pm and 6am, until Friday 13 July (Monday to Friday only). A clearly signed diversion will be in place via junction 14 and return.

 

M4 junctions 15 Swindon, Wiltshire to 14 Hungerford, West Berkshire: technology

Work to monitor the network by replacing a weather station alongside the M4 takes place this week. The M4 eastbound will be closed from junction 15 to 14 overnight, between 11pm and 6am, on Monday 2 July. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the A346, A4 and A338.

 

M27 junction 1 Cadnam, Hampshire: bridge joint replacement

Works to replace the joints of the bridges which carry the M27 over the roundabout at junction 1 continues this week. The M27 westbound will be closed between the slip roads at junction 1 overnight, between 9pm and 6am, until Wednesday 11 July. A clearly signed diversion will be in place down and across the junction.

 

M27 junction 4 Chilworth, Hampshire: resurfacing

Work to improve journeys by resurfacing the links at the M27/M3 interchange continues this week. The link from the M27 eastbound to the M3 northbound will be closed overnight, between 9pm and 6am, until Tuesday 10 July (Monday to Friday only). A clearly signed diversion will be in place via junction 5 and return.

 

A404(M) junction 9b Maidenhead, Berkshire: bridge repairs

Work to maintain journeys by replacing the bridge joint and carrying out repairs to the concrete of the bridge which carries the A404(M) over Cannon Lane continues this week. Narrow lanes and a 50mph will be in place on the northbound and southbound carriageways near junction 9b until Wednesday 25 July.

 

A31 Ringwood to Cadnam, Hampshire: road markings

Work to improve journeys by renewing the road markings along the A31 through the New Forest continues this week. The A31 eastbound will be closed from the A338 Ashley Heath roundabout to junction 1 of the M27 overnight, between 9pm and 6am, from Monday 2 July for two nights. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via Lyndhurst, the A35, Christchurch and the A338.

 

A31 St Leonards, Dorset: road markings

Work to improve journeys by renewing the road markings along the A31 near St Leonards takes place this week. The A31 eastbound will be closed from the Palmersford Roundabout to the Boundary Lane Roundabout overnight, between 9pm and 6am, on Thursday 5 July. In addition, the A31 westbound will be closed from the Boundary Lane Roundabout to the Palmersford Roundabout overnight, between 9pm and 6am, on Friday 6 July.

A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the A338, East Parley and Ringwood Road.

 

A34 Litchfield to Burghclere, Hampshire: safety barrier

Work to ensure road user safety by replacing corroded sections of the safety barrier along the verge of the A34 between Litchfield and Burghclere starts this week. The A34 northbound will be closed from Bullington Cross (the A303) to Tot Hill overnight (between 10pm and 6am), from Friday 6 July for four weeks (Monday to Friday only). A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the A303 to Basingstoke, then north on the A339 to re-join the A34 at Newbury.

 

A34 Newbury, West Berkshire: resurfacing

Work to improve journeys by resurfacing a section of the A34 around Newbury takes place this week. The A34 southbound from the A4130 Milton Interchange to Chieveley will be closed overnight, between 9pm and 6am, on Thursday 5 July. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via Rowstock, Wantage, A338 to Hungerford, A4 to Speen.

In addition, the slip road from the Moto service area to the A34/A339 southbound will be closed overnight, between 9pm and 6am, on Friday 6 July. A clearly signed diversion will be in place for those exiting the services from the Chieveley roundabout via Priors Court Road, Hermitage, B4009 to Newbury, then the A4 to re-join the A34 at Speen.

 

A34 East Ilsley, West Berkshire: signs

Work to keep road users informed by maintaining signage alongside the A34 starts this week. The northbound slip roads at East Ilsley will be closed overnight, between 9pm and 6am, from Friday 6 July for four nights (Monday to Friday only). Clearly signed diversions will be in place via the adjacent junctions.

 

A34 South Hinksey (Oxford), Oxfordshire: lay-by

Works to improve safety by converting a lay-by near South Hinksey finishes this week. The A34 southbound will be closed from the A420 Botley Interchange to the A423 Hinksey Hill junction overnight, between 9pm and 6am, until Friday 6 July. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the Oxford ring-road.

 

Safety at roadworks

Highways England is working with the industry and road users to reduce the risks of working on the roads. For the safety of road workers and all road users, when you are approaching roadworks:

  • Keep within the speed limit – it is there for your safety.
  • Get into the correct lane in good time – don’t keep switching.
  • Concentrate on the road ahead, not the roadworks.
  • Be alert for works’ traffic leaving or entering roadworks.
  • Keep a safe distance – there could be queues in front.
  • Observe all signs – they are there to help you.
  • And be alert for road workers, the roads are their workplace.
